The Business

Operating in a Fast-Moving and Competitive Industry

Caprinos Pizza Thomas Street operated from the heart of Dublin 8, serving local residents, students, workers and visitors through collection, direct ordering and third-party delivery platforms.

Like many food businesses, the store had to balance customer service and daily operations with close control over ingredients, labour, delivery commissions, VAT and cash flow.

“Having accurate and up-to-date financial information helped us understand our sales, costs, profit margins and cash flow.”

The Challenge

Understanding the True Cost of Running the Store

High sales do not automatically result in strong profitability. A takeaway must continually monitor food costs, staffing, wastage, discounts, delivery fees and fixed overheads.

Without organised records and regular financial reporting, it can be difficult for management to identify which costs are increasing or whether the business is generating sufficient cash.

Client Interview

The Story in Their Own Words

We asked the management team about their journey, the challenges they faced and the lessons learned from operating a busy food business in Dublin.

1

Tell us about Caprinos Pizza Thomas Street.

Caprinos Pizza Thomas Street is a modern pizza takeaway located in the heart of Dublin 8. We serve freshly prepared pizzas, sides, desserts and drinks for collection and delivery.

Our customers include local residents, students, office workers and visitors to the area. Our focus is simple: provide great-tasting food, friendly service and a convenient ordering experience.

Whether someone is ordering a quick meal, feeding the family or sharing pizza with friends, we want every customer to receive the same high standard of food and service.

2

What inspired you to start the business?

Thomas Street is a busy and diverse part of Dublin, with a strong mix of local residents, businesses, students and tourists.

We saw an opportunity to bring the Caprinos Pizza brand and menu to Dublin 8 while building a business that could become part of the local community.

We have always enjoyed the fast-moving nature of the food industry. Opening the store gave us the opportunity to create local employment, serve customers and develop a business over time.

3

What made the Thomas Street store different?

We placed a strong emphasis on consistency, convenience and customer service.

Customers could choose from a wide selection of pizzas, sides, desserts and meal deals, with options available for collection and delivery. The aim was to prepare every order carefully and deliver it efficiently without compromising on quality.

Customer feedback was also important. Reviews and direct comments helped the management team understand what was working well and where improvements could be made.

4

What challenges did you face when setting up the business?

Opening a food business involves much more than finding a premises and preparing food.

The setup required the management of the fit-out, equipment installation, suppliers, recruitment, staff training, food-safety requirements, online ordering systems and delivery-platform arrangements.

Once the store opened, one of the main challenges was balancing food costs, labour costs, delivery-platform commissions and other overheads while continuing to provide good value to customers.

Building awareness in the competitive Dublin takeaway market also required local marketing, promotional offers and a consistent focus on customer feedback.

5

How did GA & Co Accountants support the business?

Running a busy pizza takeaway requires constant attention to customers, employees, suppliers and daily operations. Reliable accounting support allowed the management team to spend more time focusing on the store.

GA & Co Accountants provided support across areas including bookkeeping, payroll, VAT compliance and financial reporting.

Accurate and up-to-date financial information helped management understand sales, costs, profit margins and cash flow. It also made it easier to identify areas where costs could be controlled and to make informed business decisions.

6

What did you learn from running a pizza takeaway in Dublin?

One of the biggest lessons was that sales alone do not determine whether a business is financially successful.

Food businesses need to monitor ingredient costs, staffing levels, delivery commissions, discounts, wastage and other overheads carefully. Even a busy store can experience cash-flow pressure when these costs are not properly controlled.

Consistency is equally important. Customers expect the same quality and service each time they order, making staff training and clear operating procedures essential.

7

What were your plans for developing the business?

The aim was to continue developing the customer base and establish the Thomas Street store as a recognised pizza takeaway in Dublin 8.

The business planned to strengthen its online ordering service, develop its local marketing and encourage more customers to order directly from the store.

A further priority was to build long-term customer relationships through consistent food quality, dependable delivery and friendly service.

Any further growth opportunities would be considered based on their commercial viability.

Key Business Lesson

Sales Are Important, but Cash Flow, Cost Control and Financial Reporting Drive Long-Term Success

Every successful business needs more than strong sales. Regular bookkeeping, VAT compliance and management reporting help business owners understand profitability, monitor costs and make informed decisions with confidence.
